During a recent library visit our nanny picked out the following book:
It's not easy for a mother to leave her child each day or for the child to be away from mama. This sweet book explores those feelings.
The book starts out:
Oh my baby, little one,
the hardest thing I do
is hold you tight, then let you go,
and walk away from you.
In rhyming text the author goes through the day explaining how their love is wrapped around and inside everything they do. At the end we read:
But oh my baby, little one,
the sweetest thing I do
is sweep you up and hold you tight
and come back home to you.
Whether you are a parent who works outside the home, or inside the home, most of us can relate to the heart tug we feel when saying good-bye to a child. Even if for just a day, when my children are gone, I look forward to their return. They may drive me bonkers when they argue and fight but when we are apart it always feels as though a piece of my heart puzzle is missing. When we all sit together at the dinner table the puzzle piece slides back into place and things feel whole.
My eldest son is gone every weekend (with his father) and for the last 6 years I've felt as though my weekends were missing that puzzle piece. His siblings feel the same way and ask, "Who is missing from the dinner table, mom? It's our brother! He's missing!" I appreciate the sentiment of "Oh my baby, little one" and value the message even more so, due to our family circumstances.
Purchase the book Online or check it out from your local library!
