Do you meet your child at eye level? PDF Print E-mail

One of the most effective ways to build self esteem in others, including children, is through the following avenue:

Eye contact.

Do you meet your child at his/her level? Do you bend down when talking to your baby or toddler?

When surveying potential childcare or preschool locations, are you aware of the eye contact (or lack of) being made between the teachers and the children?

Oftentimes movies will poke fun at the "pompous arrogant suit" who never makes eye contact with the people speaking to him/her. The spouse, children or employees will begin speaking, hoping to gain his/her undivided attention - only to be let down. The frustration rises and the aggravation persists. "When will he/she look at me? Drop that cell phone? Meet me where I am? Pay attention to me?"

Eye contact sends the following messages:

  • I am listening to you
  • I care about what you are saying
  • You matter to me
  • I hear what you are telling me
  • You have my attention
  • I respect you
  • Nothing else is more important than this moment, right now

Children who are raised to be seen and heard grow into adults who value others. It's that simple.

When working with children, I have always gotten down on my knees or bottom. I look the child right in the eyes and speak...or listen. Whatever the moment calls for.

Every person wants to know that their opinions, needs and feelings are going to be validated.

Children want and need that validation just as much as grown ups do. This simple, effective method is free but the results are, of course, priceless.

This is so true! I have to remind myself to actually get down on the floor more often, but it is a really effective way of connecting with my daughters.
