Monday Morning Coffee with Dr. Sally (May 2, 2011)

There is no better time than the present to nurture your child’s self-confidence.

Dr._SallyTips 1-31 (from my soon-to-come book) are strategies to help your child believe in him or herself. With each simple suggestion you will discover a practical way to help your child feel self-assured. This one characteristic generates more positive energy than almost any other attribute. It is considered to be the key to having successful life experiences.

Love is the heart of the matter. If you love, you live it. If you live it, your actions will reflect it. If you reflect it, others will feel it. Acting out of love always gives the proper message. Each of the tips will make a unique contribution to your child’s life, and all of them together represent love.

Kindness in words creates confidence; kindness in thinking creates profoundness; kindness in giving creates love. - Lao Tzu

Tip 1:

Teach your child with love to have a positive sense of self.

Appreciate outwardly your child’s ordinary actions as much as you can. This kind of recognition conveys pride. Your awareness of your child’s daily life is directly related to his or her growth in self-awareness. Your positive attention is what helps your child generate inner pride and high self-esteem.

Here are some examples:

“You lifted your head; you rolled over; you sat up,” you can say to your baby.
“You smiled; you sang; you talked,” you can say to your toddler.
“You helped; you cooperated; you carried my bag,” you can say to your preschooler.

Have fun with these and many, many more of your own!

Tune in next Monday for more positive tips...
