I love Tom's point. I think I could kick quite a few of my men friends’ butts; I digress back to the topic. I absolutely believe that we need to celebrate a child's individuality soon enough society will push them into pre-defined "proper" choices - Let them enjoy discovering their uniqueness unencumbered for as long as you/we can :-)

Thanks for the input, everyone! Tom - I also try to use the words "typically" or "tend to" or "usually" or "often." Rather than "boys are" or "girls are." Good point! There is always an exception to the rule - very true. Nicole - that's interesting. I haven't read that book yet. Thanks for sharing. Wendy - You know I agree with you, fully. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

Any statement that begins with "Boys are . . ." or "Girls are . . ." is a false statement. I always strive to get the word "tend" in there. Boys tend to like to play with cars. Girls tend to like to play princesses. Etc. My mental experiment about this is to start with the statement, "Men are stronger than women." This may be true in the big picture, but there are a lot of women out there who could kick my butt! We run into problems when we use gender, rather than capability, to organize human beings -- like only hiring male firefighters because women are "too weak." I think this is a an important distinction. I've seen far too many people -- parents included -- who try to jam their little ones into predetermined boxes. It's not good for anyone. Yes, there are gender tendencies, but we must recognize that we're all on the same continuum, not isolated in separate boxes.

So true...reading the book "Bringing Up Girls" right now and it had a whole chapter discussing this and pointed out several of the things you did :) And of course we've talked about personalities in the womb several times :) Tyler loves it when I read bedtimes stories! :D

(continuting) I think it is also important that parents keep a watchful eye on media, advertising and other influences that might derail our children (male and female) and separate them from their true essence. We live in a world of possibilites that our grandmothers and granfathers never would have imagined. Parents are the keepers of the future...and all of the good stuff that we pour into our kids...and the support that we offer them to follow their deepest dreams will benefit not only our grandchildren, but the world at large! Heavy stuff, really, if you think about it!

Shara~You are so right. The differences in what makes us "female" or "male" are undeniable. We need to celebrate the uniqueness of what makes us "US". We also need to help our kids embrace their gender, while at the same time not pigeon-holing them because of their biology/anatomy . This can be a tall order. Hmmmmm...no biological barriers. To teach our daughters that they can be STRONG in every sense of the word...that they can become anything, dream anything, succeed at whatever their heart desires if they work hard enough. To teach our sons that they can be SENSITIVE and CARING and NURTURING. To teach BOTH our sons AND our daughters that they can be ALL of the above, all at the same time. Imagine this generation of kids growing up and raising the next generation of kids to do the same...only doing it even better than we did!
