My kids LOVE music. I'm a big believer in the importance and value of music in the home. I know that many parents scoff at 'kid music' and truth be told, a lot of kid music is annoying, yes. However, it's also an invaluable tool, helping children with their letters, numbers, animal sounds, earth friendly lessons, creativity and much more. My kids sing, dance, memorize words and concepts, spin around, laugh, giggle and have a wonderful time when music is playing. I wouldn't give that up for anything! Even if the music does, at times, annoy me. All for the greater good...
Last Christmas I decided to make my kids a music box - full of instruments they can use. I keep them stored in a plastic container so we can pull them out on the days when I do NOT already have a headache (smile).
Here's our box:

Here's what's inside. We made a few of the instruments ourselves, gathered up some whistles from events we attended and I purchased many of the items from Kids Travel Happy. The entire box ended up costing me around $25 - far less than buying a bundle of instruments from a pre-created package at the store. Most of those packages contain just a few instruments and they cost anywhere from $20-60. If you create your own box you'll get more bang for your buck:

Research tells us that children who are read to a lot learn to read well and that children who are involved in many conversations learn to speak well.
In addition, it tells us that children who are sung to a lot learn to sing well and that children who interact with music a lot learn to enjoy it, play instruments, and sing well.
Enriched play environments are fun, and they turn into rich adult experiences... and that is terrific!
